May the 4th Be With You: Ranking My Top 10 Star Wars Games

May the fourth be with you! On Star Wars Day, I count down the best Star Wars games in a galaxy far, far away.

Happy May the 4th! In honor of this special intergalactic celebration, I have compiled a list of my top 10 favorite Star Wars games. While building the list, I took into account various factors such as storylines, engaging gameplay, graphics, and replay value. I must confess, my personal nostalgia has played a significant role in shaping this list. Therefore, you may come across some underrated gems that hold a special place in my heart. Despite their lesser-known status, these titles possess their own unique qualities that make them stand out.

Whether you're a die-hard Star Wars fan or just love a great gaming experience, there's something for everyone on my top 10. Here are my picks working up to *drum roll...err...Imperial Marching* the top spot.

10. Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

1994 | JVC | Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Speaking of epic Star Wars experiences on a Nintendo console, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi on the SNES was one of my fondest memories of the console. Although the game was quite difficult in parts, it really captured the feel of Return of the Jedi.

I spent many a summer night passing the controller with friends trying to vanquish the Death Star. The graphics and sound effects were impressive back in day and helped define what a Star Wars game should look and feel like.

9. Star Wars: Squadrons

2020 | Motive Studios | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows

If you ever wondered what it would be like to pilot many of the spacecrafts in the Star Wars universe, Squadrons has you covered.

In the most authentic sci-fi piloting experience I've ever played, you can almost feel the laser blasts zipping past your cockpit. Along with first-person space dogfights alongside your squadron, it also packs a pretty good Star Wars story.

8. Star Wars: Battlefront II

2017 | DICE, Motive Studio | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows

Battlefront II is a sequel to the 2015 game, that improves upon the original's formula in every way. There is a dedicated story campaign, more planets to visit in multiplayer mode and classes offer more options for customization.

It's also one of the prettiest games on the list, the score and sound fx are top notch too. Unfortunately, the progression system and micro transactions did hamper the experience, but it's still a fun game at its core.

7. Star Wars: Republic Commando

2005 | LucasArts | Xbox, Windows remastered on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4

Another great entry from the original Xbox era, this squad-based tactical shooter was one of my favorites back then and continues to be today. It's not only a great entry in the Star Wars canon, but also a great first-person shooter.

It really stood out from the crowd with its focus on tactical play over your typical run and gun experience. If you love sci-fi games or just great shooters, Republic Commando is a must-try.

6. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

2019 | Respawn Entertainment | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC

One of the latest entries in the Star Wars video game franchise has quite the reputation and it doesn't disappoint. Set five years after Revenge of the Sith, you play as Cal Kestis who is on the run from the Empire with fellow Padawan Cere Junda.

It's an exciting story that falters sometimes due to some frustrating gameplay mechanics, but overall this title deserves its place near the top of this list, besides its faults it a love letter to Star Wars fans.

5. Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

2001 | Factor 5 | Nintendo Gamecube

There's something about the Rogue Squadron games that just make them so fun to play. The second entry in the series is no different, once again improving upon it's already excellent predecessor. Rogue Squadron II was also a launch title for the Nintendo Gamecube, and one of the games I played most when the little purple cube made its debut in November of 2001. What also makes the game special is it spans all three original trilogy Star Wars films. You also get to play as Luke Skywalker or Wedge Antilles on their legendary sorties. As these iconic characters you are tasked with leading a squadron of X-wings against the Empire. With some of the best graphics at the time, an excellent soundtrack and tight controls, it's easy to see why this game is considered one of the greatest Star Wars flying sims ever made.

4. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

2022 | Traveller’s Tales | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

The latest entry in the long line of Lego Star Wars games is easily the best one yet. It covers all nine movies in the Skywalker saga and does so with the usual Traveller's Tales charm. It's also one of the most ambitious Lego games to date, with an impressive number of levels to play through. I recently reviewed it on the blog if you are looking for more in-depth thoughts, trust this is one of the best games to play to celebrate Star Wars Day.

3. Star Wars: Jedi Survivor

2023 | Respawn Entertainment | Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor is a thrilling and action-packed adventure that takes you on a journey through the eyes of a young Jedi, struggling to survive in a post-Order 66 galaxy. This game showcases the iconic lightsaber combat that has become a hallmark of the Star Wars franchise, providing players with a satisfying and authentic experience.

The graphics and sound design are top-notch, immersing you in the world of the Star Wars universe like never before. With challenging puzzles, varied force abilities, and an engrossing storyline, Jedi Survivor is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars gaming canon. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual gamer, Jedi Survivor is a must-play title that will keep you entertained for hours on end.

2. Star Wars: Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast

2002 | Raven Software | Gamecube, Xbox, PC recently ported to the Nintendo Switch

Jedi Knight II is a first-person and third person shooter that puts you in the boots of Kyle Katarn. As Katarn you must stop a new Dark Jedi from taking over the galaxy. What puts Jedi Outcast so high on the list is, it features some of the best lightsaber combat ever seen in a video game and is just an all-around great Star Wars game. It also features over 8 different "force powers" along with a host of weapons from the Star Wars universe.

1. Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic

2003 | BioWare | PC, Xbox, remake announced for PS5

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic is always in the discussion when it comes to the best Star Wars game ever created. It's likely to top many 'best sci-fi games' list as well. You play as an upstart Jedi who joins forces with the Republic to stop Darth Malak from taking over the galaxy.

Set thousands of years before A New Hope, it offers a rich cast of characters and gripping story that will keep you engaged until the end. If you are looking for the ultimate Star Wars experience, it doesn't get any better than KOTOR. Recently, Sony announced a full remake is incoming exclusively to the PlayStation 5, you can check out all the details here.

Honourable Mentions

There are so many amazing titles to fit into one list, as more Star Wars games launch certain titles drop off my "top ten" but aren't forgotten. Here's one of my honourable mentions:

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

1996 | LucasArts | Nintendo 64, Windows

The N64 classic kicks off the countdown, the third-person shooter was unique mixing in various vehicle sequences along with interesting characters. The protagonist, Dash Rendar, makes for a very interesting addition to the universe. The game also did a great job of blending its own story with that of a new hero in the canon with Rendar.

One memory of the game that will also stick with me is trying to wrap the legs of an AT-AT walker on planet Hoth with the 360 degree analog stick, fun times.
