Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S Review

I explore the differences between the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, from design, and performance to mixed reality features, my full review.

The Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S are the two flagship offerings in Meta’s virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) ecosystem. Both sets of hardware deliver standalone functionality that makes immersive experiences more accessible than ever. The headsets also eliminate the need for external sensors or a PC, offering a streamlined gateway into VR and AR worlds. While the Quest 3 is positioned as the premium option, the Quest 3S caters to entry-level users with a budget-friendly approach.

I’ll dive deeper into both models’ differences across design, performance, and features in my full review, let’s dive in.

Unboxing Experience and Initial Impressions of the Meta Quest 3 and 3S

The packaging of both headsets reflects thoughtful organization, with all accessories neatly arranged for easy setup. In addition to the headset and set of two controllers, you’ll find a USB-C charging cable, power adapter, and a glasses spacer for added comfort.

An interesting detail to note about the Quest 3S is its slightly lighter weight of 514 grams compared to the Quest 3’s 515 grams. While the difference is negligible, it underscores Meta’s focus on ergonomics across its Quest device line-up. Both headsets include the same Touch Plus controllers, integrating improved haptics and tracking precision, ensuring consistent performance across the ecosystem.

Meta Quest 3 and 3S Design and Build Quality

In my testing, I found the Quest 3 offers a more balanced design, making extended use more comfortable. Its compact form factor distributes weight evenly, which helped to reduce the pressure on my face. On the other hand, the Quest 3S is slightly bulkier, and I found it to be front-heavy during longer sessions. That said, the Quest 3S compensates with improved ventilation, helping reduce discomfort caused by heat during prolonged use, an upgrade from the Quest 2.

Lens and Visual Performance on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S

The biggest difference between the two headsets lies in the lens technology. The Quest 3 features advanced pancake lenses with a resolution of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, offering sharp visuals, superior colour fidelity, and reduced visual artifacts. Whether I was using productivity apps, enjoying videos or playing games, everything looks incredibly sharp and vivid with the Quest 3.

The Quest 3S, on the other hand, utilizes Fresnel lenses, delivering 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye. Though slightly lower in resolution, the Quest 3S still excels at providing immersive visuals. I did notice more “screen door” effects at certain angles with games like Batman Arkham Shadow. Outside of that the Quest 3S still offered one of the best VR experiences I’ve had to date.

Mixed Reality and Hand Tracking

The mixed reality capabilities of the Quest 3 are bolstered by its depth sensor, allowing for more precise spatial mapping and integration of virtual objects into the real world. This feature shines in applications requiring detailed environmental awareness, such as designing virtual spaces or advanced gaming. For example, picking up small objects in a game like Batman: Arkham Shadow was far more responsive with the Quest 3.

The Quest 3S, on the other hand does not have a depth sensor like its older brother the Quest 3. Despite lacking the hardware and same level of spatial mapping precision, the 3S still impressed me with its hand-tracking responsiveness.

Overall Hardware Performance and Ecosystem

The Quest 3 and 3S are powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, offering the same graphical processing power in both units. The Quest 3 delivers a significant performance boost over its predecessor, the Quest 2, handling graphically demanding games and multitasking extremely well. Both headsets benefit from Meta’s extensive Oculus library, which includes standout gaming exclusives like Asgard's Wrath 2, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, and Batman: Arkham Shadow. While the Quest 3 provides enhanced performance for visually demanding games, the Quest 3S remains an excellent entry point for newcomers.

Battery Life and Practicality

Battery life is comparable between the two headsets, with the Quest 3 lasting 2-3 hours and the Quest 3S offering a slight edge with up to 2.5 hours. Both fully charge within two hours using the included USB-C cable, offering a little less downtime. Additionally, both models support charging while in use, a handy feature for longer gaming sessions. Just keep in mind that this limits a lot of your mobility but gives you more time with your Quest.

Final Verdict on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S

The Meta Quest 3 stands out as the ultimate choice for users seeking cutting-edge performance, exceptional visual clarity, and advanced mixed-reality capabilities. On the other hand, the Quest 3S serves as an excellent budget-friendly alternative, delivering many of the same core benefits with fewer premium features. Whether you're a seasoned VR enthusiast or just starting your journey into virtual reality, both headsets provide immersive and versatile experiences tailored to a wide range of preferences.

Ultimately, the decision between the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S comes down to your budget and the level of performance you desire. Regardless of which option you choose, both models set a high bar for VR technology, ensuring a fantastic entry point or upgrade for anyone eager to explore the world of virtual reality.
