James Gunn’s Superman: First Trailer Soars
Get your first look at James Gunn’s Superman, set to soar into theatres on July 11, 2025. My trailer breakdown, cast highlights, DC Universe nods, and what this film means for the future of Superman.
Today, James Gunn finally gave us a first look at the hotly anticipated upcoming Superman movie. Set to release this summer on July 11, 2025, it has ignited excitement among fans, offering a glimpse into a refreshed DC Universe. Here’s the full trailer below, followed by my breakdown of everything coming at you faster than a speeding bullet.
A New Era of Heroes and Villains
David Corenswet steps into Superman's read and blue tights, embodying the iconic hero's ideals of hope and justice. He also looks the part for a more understated role as Clarke Kent. Joining him is Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the intrepid journalist and confidante. Nicholas Hoult portrays the formidable antagonist, Lex Luthor, bringing a sinister and unhinged presence to the narrative based on this first look. The trailer also introduces Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern a.k.a Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, expanding the roster of heroes.
Nods to the DC Universe
The trailer is rich with nods to the broader DC Universe. A brief appearance by Krypto (and my favourite part), Superman's loyal canine companion, hints at his sidekick role in the film. The inclusion of Stagg Industries, known for its unethical practices in the comics, suggests potential plot developments. Additionally, glimpses of the Fortress of Solitude and the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet emphasize Clark Kent's dual life as a reporter and superhero.
Villains Galore
While Lex Luthor is confirmed as a central antagonist, the trailer hints at additional adversaries. The scenes depicting a character resembling Ultraman, suggests a possible confrontation and or bigger showdown. The appearance of Angélica Spica, also known as The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría, indicates her involvement in the storyline. Either way, it looks like a lot of different characters rolled into one film. Truthfully, I am a little worried with “too many chefs in the kitchen,” but if anyone can pull off multiple story threads, it’s Gunn.
Visual and Thematic Elements
The snapshot of James Gunn's direction looks to blend traditional Superman lore with more contemporary cinematic techniques. The trailer's tone balances action-packed sequences with moments highlighting Clark Kent's human side, suggesting a narrative that delves into his internal struggles and relationships. It looks like we will catch up with a more “adult” Superman and fly into the action right away, but that remains to be seen.
Final Thoughts on the First Superman Trailer
Overall, the Superman trailer offers a promising first glimpse into a film that seeks to honour the legacy of the iconic superhero while introducing fresh elements and characters to captivate longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
